Journey of the Zodiac

I feel very grateful to have been part of this project. We began brainstorming the idea a for long time and planned to work together in Athens for ten days to make it happen. It was fun, inspiring and very fulfilling to create these images and texts. 

The prints from Journey of the Zodiac are a collaboration between artist Eloise Fornieles, curator Alix Janta-Polczynski and myself combining text and imagery to tell the narrative of the Zodiac in an artistic and innovative way.

I wrote the text next to each image which narrates the story of each sign but mainly the reason why one sign follows another. The story of the Zodiac is for me immensely inspiring as it expresses our history as humans. Knowing why Taurus comes after Aries and then transforms into Gemini is key to understanding the essential quality of a sign. Otherwise we can stay in stereotypes and end up limiting or pinning down each sign rather than allowing freedom to the energetic quality to exist in infinite ways. This is why in every image we made reference to the preceding sign and the following one as well as the element, ruling planet, the part of the body, mythology, colour, any instrument or concept and evolutionary process.

Libra is the only sign in the circle of animals which is not represented by a living creature; instead, it is shown as the scales of justice. This symbolises the union of opposites and how civilised Libra people are.

We can see that Libra has incorporated Virgo’s ability to rationalise and categorise information, and has gone a step further with it, because in this sign, information can be used to unite people and create relationships. 

As seventh sign in the circle of twelve, Libra is the first that opposes another sign, Aries. This brings the idea of the other half, of falling in love and being complementary. Ruled by Venus, creating balance and building relationships are key for Libra. They are loving, sociable, relationship-oriented, fair minded, cooperative, peace loving and indecisive. 

They have an ability to compromise, collaborate, mediate and conciliate. However, this consideration for others can often result in the Libran having no clear idea of what is personally desired, and it may be difficult to realise ambitions or to find motivation outside of important relationships. 

They are thought to be in balance but the truth is they are always searching for balance and beauty. They are the tightrope walker of the Zodiac as they are in constant tension, pleasing others and fulfilling other people’s needs. Mainly because they don’t like conflict so they prefer to hide what they don’t want to see. 

Integrating their opposite sign, Aries, allows them to connect with their desire and from that place stop doubting and contemplating to finally take action.  

Libra is from the 23rd of September till the 23rd of October.
